Journey Hat

The Journey Hat
(because it's all about the journey)

Here it is!
My interpretation of a Free People hat from a year or so ago.
I knit pile of these, working out the math, then put it away for a year. Recently it caught my attention again, and now here it is!

Works up best in a painted yarn
(in my opinion) , but also beautiful in a solid.
Scroll down to see more images knit in different yarns.

Hat is knit holding 2 strands of worsted yarn together to make knitting faster and to make the color combos even more spectacular. Simply knit from both ends of the wound skein.
Different yarn fibers will give you a variety of 'slouch'. For example, a bamboo blend yarn will be slouchier than 100% wool, because it is loftier and lighter. make sense?

The Journey Hat

Materials:
~
~ 1 skein of worsted weight yarn, approx. 210+ yards
(knit from both ends of the wound skein)
**A DK or light worsted held double will work well also!-- or a single strand of a chunky yarn**
~ Size 8, 16 inch circular needle

~ Size 10 1/2, 16 inch circular needle

~ Size 10 1/2 dpn
~ Tape measure
~ Yarn sized needle

Brim
~
Cast 64 st onto size 8 circ. needle.

K3P1 rib for 2 inches (approx. 11 rows)

Body~
Switch to 10 1/2 circ. needle.

Round 1, Purl

Round 2, Knit

Round 3, Increase round, *K2, M1*, continue * entire round, increasing to 96 st.
Round 4, Purl

Round 5, Lace round *YO twice, K3tog*, Continue in this pattern entire round.

Round 6,
*K, Kbl, K* repeat entire round (Kbl means Knit in back loop)
Round 7, Knit

Round 8, Purl

Round 9,
Lace round *YO twice, K3tog*, Continue in this pattern entire round.
Round 10, *K, Kbl, K* repeat entire round
Round 11, Knit
Round 12 and on, continue to
purl until hat measures 5 inches from the edge .

Decreases~

Place a marker every 12 stitches.

*P10, P2tog*, Continue in this pattern entire round.

Purl 2 rounds normally
*P9, P2tog*, Continue in this pattern entire round.

Purl 2 rounds normally

*P8, P2tog*, Continue in this pattern entire round.

Purl 1 round normally.

Repeat the decrease rounds, purling 2tog before each marker with just 1 normal round in between each decrease row until you have 8 stitches remaining, switching to dpn when necessary.
Thread needle and connect all remaining stitches and secure, closing the hole.

Kbl= means knit in the back loop of the stitch (normally you knit in the front loop).. the stitch created by the second yarn over will be backwards. Knitting in the back of the loop will twist it around.
M1= means Make One, and it creates an increase. I do this by picking up the bar between stitches and knitting in the back of it. There are many ways to M1... choose your favorite.

I too love this hat. I am currently in progress with it and had only enough yarn to make it small for my grand daughter. I just finished Round 5 of the Lace Round and Round 6 tells me to: (*K, Kbl,K*) I am at a loss to know what "Kbl" means. Can you clear this up for me so I can keep going. I love the pattern.
Thanks :)

KBL means to knit in the back of the loop, rather than in the front.
Making 2 yarn over wraps in a row makes the second stitch a bit wonky, knitting into the back of it makes a neater knit stitch.
You can learn more about abbreviations at knittinghelp.com.
Please email me if you need anything else at materialwhirledyarn@gmail.com.

thanks!

I knit one of these hats and get a bunch of compliments on it. I knit my first one using Malabrigo Worsted. I believe I knit the yarn from both ends of the yarn cake. I used size 8 needles for the brim and 9 for the body of the hat. Brim seemed a little loose but the body of the hat was fine, so I figured I would do the next hat using size 7 needles for the brim.

A co-worker really wants one of these hats. This weekend I started one. Using worsted weight yarn from my stash. Size 7 for the brim was a little tight, but not too bad. Size 9 needles for the brim was WAY too big. Ripped it out, and went down to size 8 for the body. Still WAY too big. I am going to rip back again, but am not sure what needle size to use for the body of the hat. I figured that I would go down to a size 7, but I don't know if it will make a big enough difference. Any advice?

mrsmcg,

My advice is to just play with the needle sizes until you get what makes you happy.... what yarn brand are you using? As you can see in the pictures above, different brands and weights make a really drastic difference in how the hat slouches...
Sry no specific answer for you...
LMN how it turns out?

Not sure what brand of yarn I am using as it is an unlabeled yarn that I came across in my stash. I have already ripped out the body of the hat twice. Not sure how to figure out what needle size is going to work until I get to the decrease portion of the hat. By that time I have done a lot of knitting that I have to rip out.

I am surprised that size 8 for the body is still too large, as I tend to be a tight knitted (and used size 9 for the bod on my last Journey Hat). I have problems on the lace rows when the pattern calls for k3tog as my sts are tight.

BTW, do you know if there is enough yarn to do the hat with Malabrigo Chunky?

I will let you know how hat turns out.

This pattern is beautiful! Do you have a similar pattern without circular needles?

Reenie Hanlin said...

Nelieta, I do not have a version for straight needles... only circular.

Is this a circular in the round knit?
Thank you

It is knit in the round, you can download the complete pattern at this link...

I’m very new at knitting so I apologize in advance if this is a dumb question. I love this hat and I’m excited to get started but I’m confused about the brim. The pattern says k3p1 rib, but looking at the photos it looks like k3p3. I’m totally open for suggestions. Thank you for sharing your pattern.

Rhonda,

No such thing as a dumb question!
The pattern for the brim is indeed K3 P1, but you can knit it in any rib combination you like, as long as it maths out to 4 stitches.
K2 P2, K3 P1, K1 P3, etc....
Post pics on Ravelry when you are finished? Would love to see it.

Can this be knit with one strand of DK? If so, suggestion for needle sizes.
Thank you.
